About Donnellson - Education

preschool & k-12

Donnellson is in the Central Lee School District, which offers the finest in Iowa public education. Students attend Central Lee K-8 Middle School and Central Lee High School. Both buildings are located 6 miles south of Donnellson on Hwy. 218.

Recent improvements at the K-8 include new playground equipment and air conditioning. The high school underwent a major addition and facelift in 2002, with more phases planned in the future. The addition includes a high-tech ICN room and computer Internet services, a library, additional classrooms and a beautiful new art room. The high school has installed air conditioning, improved parking, and outdoor athletic lighting. Central Lee also boasts an all-weather track.

Graduates from Central Lee would certainly enjoy a tour of the new facilities.

Central Lee has become a shining example of a state-of-the-art school in a beautiful rural setting.

Youngsters enjoy Miss Janet’s Preschool, located in the old school building in Donnellson at the corner of University and Orchard Streets. Miss Janet has classes for 3 yr olds and for 4 yr olds.

The Michael Burke Foundation

Michael Burke, 27, was enjoying an annual excursion with two close friends (also from Iowa) as they biked across their home state as part of Ragbrai, the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, when tragedy struck and Burke was killed by a fallen tree while they camped for the night.

Friends and family have rallied together to create the Michael Burke Foundation, an educational organization whose main goal is to provide opportunity for Iowa high school students. Each year, the Michael Burke Foundation will provide one local high school senior the opportunity to attend the University of Iowa, Burke’s alma mater.

The first-year goal of the Michael Burke Foundation is to provide a scholarship for one Central Lee High School senior. However, much like Michael himself, the Foundation has larger aspirations. In the years to come, the Foundation hopes to provide multiple scholarships and to expand their web site so it can serve as a valuable source of information for young college-bound students with online mentoring capabilities.
