The Donnellson Public Library provides helpful service and popular materials to residents of the Donnellson area. The Library achieves Iowa’s highest level of accreditation, based on standards that include circulations per capita, funding levels by the City of Donnellson, hours of operation, accessibility, etc. Materials available for check-out include current books, magazines, video tapes, DVD’s, music CD’s and reference materials. There are 4 computers available for public access, as well as copying machines and FAX services. Currently, the library has 2000 registered patrons from Donnellson, the surrounding area of Lee County and the Farmington area.
The Library provides a program each week for preschool children and an 8-week Summer Reading Program. The Donnellson Public Library has an active volunteer program of senior citizens who compile materials and do genealogical research in the Local and Family History Department. Total circulations for 2003 were 42,226. The Library is open 6 days per week, for a total of 47.5 hours.
The Local & Family History Department is considered the finest in Iowa, if not the nation. The group formed in 1986 and has 5 to 7 volunteers who are in the Library on Tuesday afternoons. The volunteers work 35 to 50 hours each week, dedicated to collecting and saving information. Visit their web site.
The Genealogy Dept. has collections of family histories, thousands of obituaries, old newspapers on microfiche, census records, scrapbooks on the ghost towns of Lee County, Donnellson and Lee Co. historical information, and information on old schools, churches and cemeteries. Genealogy has information compiled on the nearby underground railroad activity with some very interesting stories. Research materials, maps, and books on Germany and other European countries are available.
The Donnellson Genealogy Dept. accepts old scrapbooks, newspaper articles, obituaries and historical event information that could help the department. Contact the Library at 319-835-5545.
