Flouride Report Donnellson Municipal Water IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER
Elevated Fluoride Levels Detected in Donnellson Municipal Water Works Water This is an alert about your drinking water and a cosmetic dental problem that might affect children under nine years of age. At low levels, fluoride can help prevent cavities, but children drinking water containing more than 2 milligrams per liter (mg/l) of fluoride may develop cosmetic discoloration of their permanent teeth (dental fluorosis). The drinking water provided by your community water system, Donnellson Municipal Water Works, has a fluoride concentration of 3.4 mg/l. Dental fluorosis in its moderate or severe forms, may result in a brown staining and or pitting of the permanent teeth. This problem occurs only in developing teeth, before they erupt from the gums. Children under nine should be provided with alternative sources of drinking water or water that has been treated to remove the fluoride to avoid the possibility of staining and pitting of their permanent teeth. You may also want to contact your dentist about proper use by young children of fluoride-containing products. Older children and adults may safely drink the water. Drinking water containing more than 4.0 mg/l of fluoride (the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s drinking water standard) can increase your risk of developing bone disease. Your drinking water does not contain more than 4.0 mg/l of fluoride, but we’re required to notify you when we discover that the fluoride levels in your drinking water exceed 2.0 mg/l because of this cosmetic dental problem. For more information, please call David Chaney of Donnellson Municipal Water Works at 319-835-5210. Some home water treatment units are also available to remove fluoride from drinking water. In Iowa, home water treatment units are regulated under 641-Chapter 14, with the water treatment unit registration program administered by the Iowa Department of Public Health’s environmental health division. In addition, you may call the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) International, at 1-877-867-3435. Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail. This message is being sent to you by Donnellson Municipal Water Works. PWSID#: 5620046. Date distributed: January 2008 |

Eunice Overton Memorial helps put train back in Donnellson Railroad Park. UPDATE: Bruce Hopp will be working on constructing the 4-piece train set over the winter months. Thank you, Bruce! We hope to be able to install this by the depot spring 2008. Three railroad cars are completed!
Donations from the Mary Knox Memorials are also being used for this project. The family of Eunice Overton wanted to honor not only their mother, Eunice, but also there grandfather, Alfred Best, by conating her $800 memorial to Donnellson Vision Inc. for the construction of a four-piece children's wooden train set to be installed next to the Donnellson Depot. Eunice's parents, Alfred and Clara Best lived in a one-story frame house that used to be on the corner of Main & Pine Streets. Ardis and Charlene have fond memories of visiting their grandparents in Donnellson and attending outdoor movies at the bandstand in Railroad Park. Ardis said Eunice used to ride "Old Jerky", the train between Donnellson and Keokuk quite often. Alfred Best was the depot agent at the Donnellson Depot during the early 1930's. The Best Family also ran the motel across the street from the depot called 'Hotel Best'. |

IDNR Based Business Opportunity Grant Background: On behalf of Lee County, Geode RC&D applied for $25,000 from the IDNR for a Natural Resources Based Business Opportunity Grant. We have received the $25,000 for the project. The money will be spent to hire a part-time coordinator for the project, market tours, and to train the guides. The tours must focus on the unique natural resources in Lee County, such as Shimek State Forest, Agriculture Alternative Energy, the Mississippi and local farm tours. The project hopes to catalogue and map tours that are already being provided by local residents and add to those to create a diverse package for those interested in visiting the area.
Donnellson has been chosen as the 'hub' for this project due to our location at Hwy 218/27 and Hwy 2. Shimek Forest Tours will be promoted. We hope to promote this project and will be working with Iowa Wesleyan College students to document history of the Donnellson area or written records of the knowledge local people hold -- such as the Richard Proenneke Story. We hope to implement Working Farm Tours and will be doing a survey of Lee County farmers to see what interest there is in participating. The Working Farm Tour will aim for 2-5 farms to showcase; work with producers who are willing to give rides in machinery, show their animals; have schedules that can accommodate groups on the farm; encourage producers to sell some of their own products to the visitors. Mississippi River tours will be made available. We will be advertising for a part-time tour coordinator soon. This is an opportunity to bring tourism dollars to our area. |

Public Libraries on the Web Library Director Brenda Knox is taking a series of classes funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to link the Donnellson Library to the State Library of Iowa and to the Internet via a new website and email service. Training is taking place at the AEA in Ottumwa, and will consist of four 6 hour sessions.
So far, the Library now has a new email service that is consistent with all other Iowa Libraries participating in the project. Soon, probably by April, a website will be up, that can be linked to Donnellson's website. In the future, pending the purchase of additional software, our entire catalog can be linked on the website, with the availablity of book reservations and requests. When the website is up in April, there will be tabs for reference questions. This has been a very rewarding class so far, and Brenda admits she is learning a great deal that she didn't know about how the Internet works. |

2007 Donnellson Municipal Water Consumer Confidence Report **Do I need to take special precautions?** Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. EPA/Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the Safe Water Drinking Hotline (800-426-4791). **Where does my water come from?** The City of Donnellson’s water supply obtains its water from the Cambrian-Ordovician aquifer. The Cambrian-Ordovician aquifer was determined to be not susceptible to contamination because the characteristics of theaquifer and the overlying materials prevent easy access of contaminants to the aquifer. The well will not be susceptible to most contaminant sources except through pathways to the aquifer such as abandoned or poorly maintained wells. . **Source water assessment and its availability** A detailed evaluation of your source water was completed by the Iowa DNR and is available from Jane Anderson, City Clerk at 319-835-5714. **Why are there contaminants in my drinking water?** Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791). The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity:microbial contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, that may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife; inorganic contaminants, such as salts and metals, which can be naturally occurring or result from urban stormwater runoff, industrial, or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining, or farming; pesticides and herbicides, which may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses; organic Chemical Contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are by-products of industrial processes and petroleum production, and can also come from gas stations, urban stormwater runoff, and septic systems; and radioactive contaminants, which can be naturally occurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities. In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, EPA prescribes regulations that limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health. If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. Donnellson Municipal Water is responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing you tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead. **How can I get involved?** The Donnellson Municipal Water Works monthly meeting is held at 7:00 PM the first Monday of every month. For more information, contact: David C. Chaney, 515 Todd Street , Donnellson, IA 52625 319-835-5210 In accordance to the DNR leter dated 3-19-2008 This years CCR will not be mailed to the customers. Copies of the CCR may be obtained at City Hall. Water Quality Data Table The table below lists all of the drinking water contaminants that we detected during the calendar year of this report. The presence of contaminants in the water does not necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk. Unless otherwise noted, the data presented in this table is from testing done in the calendar year of the report. The EPA or the State requires us to monitor for certain contaminants less than once per year because the concentrations of these contaminants do not change frequently. Iowa Living Roadways Visioning Committee Our committee recently filed for and received non-profit status. The group is now called: Donnellson Vision, Inc. Donations for the park project can be made to Donnellson Vision, Inc. and sent to P.O. Box 50, Donnellson, Iowa 52625. Jeff Jones is President. Steve Jones is Vice-President. Jan Fraise is Secretary/Treasurer.
Our next meeting is MAY 20, 2008 at 7 p.m. in the Pilot Grove Savings Bank Community Room on Main Street. All welcome. We will be putting the finishing touches on the Firemans Memorial Plaza....installing a 4 pc 'train' set at Railroad Park for kids to play on....installing a beautiful bronze statue in memory of Faye Kirchner at Railroad Park.....installing an entrance to the Westview Park with another bronze statue of a baseball player. Our big goal this year is to work on entrance signs. We would like to put in a sign at Hwy 218/27 and Hwy 2 that matches the "Historic Hills" signs that you may have seen popping up in counties to our west. Donnellson is the headend of the "Historic Hills Scenic Byway". These signs are BEAUTIFUL and you can see one as you drive into Farmington. There are currently 38 such signs erected along the Scenic Byway and plans for more, including Donnellson. Right now, we are looking at putting up some signs on the north and south entrances to town that are not so expensive, but will replicate the Historic Hills sign. Donnellson was one of 12 Iowa communities selected to participate in the 2005 Iowa's Living Roadways Community Visioning Program. The Visioning Program is a transportation enhancement planning program that assists members of Iowa communities in creating roadside enhancement plans. In short, we have created a concept design plan with new streetscaping and landscaping for Madison Ave (Hwy 2) and for Main Street. Check the 'Calendar' for meeting dates and times. All welcome! The concept boards are in City Hall and ready for viewing. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to look over the plans and offer any opinion. As may already know, the Pilot Grove Savings Bank of Donnellson has generously donated the large playground equipment for the Railroad Park. Thank you SO MUCH! The old wooden structure has been removed. New baby swings are ordered. THANK YOU to TTT for a $300 donation to this project. The Shorty Roth Memorial money will be used here, also for a swinging bench. |

New Restrictions at the dump & a second yard waste day added. Due to restrictions imposed by the Iowa Dept of Natural Resources, only trees and limbs will be allowed at the dump on the south edge of Donnellson. A gate has been installed and is locked, but residents can pick up a key to the gate from any city worker and at City Hall on Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays to allow dumping of trees and limbs. Violations to this policy will warrant the gate to be always locked.
Unauthorized, illegal dumping has cost the city taxpayers over $3,000 plus labor to clean up the site, plus the loss of the convenience. Gallerick Auto Sales & Salvage in Franklin can now handle appliances and white goods for disposal. The City has schedule a second Yard Waste Pick Up Day per month. The City will pick up yard waste the second Monday and the last Wednesday of the month, April thru November. City Officials remind residents that green clippings and prunings must be set out in Lee Co. Compost Bags that can be purchased at City Hall or at stores around the county. Plastic bags, cardboard boxes, wire, etc. will not be allowed. Limbs should not be over 1" in diameter and should be bundled with string for pickup and not any longer than 4' and no more than 18" in diameter. LOOSE PILES OF LIMBS AND TWIGS, NOT PROPERLY BUNDLED, WILL NOT BE PICKED UP. Yard waste not properly bundled or bagged to meet specs will not be picked up. Questions? Call City Hall at 835-5714. |

Green Acres Pool Green Acres Club is asking for support to help keep the pool open. Any size of donation would be much appreciated. The pool underwent recent upgrades and aesthetic improvements and is in great shape.
It is a wonderful asset to our town - and if it should close, it would be difficult to ever re-open. Many would love to have a pool in their small town, especially with the high cost of fuel these days. If you would like to help, donations can be sent to: Green Acres Club Pool Fund P.O.
