Music Under the Water Tower
Great music and food at the Donnellson Legion Hall. Starts at 8 p.m. Usually the first Saturday, thru April.

Cost? Freewill donation. Snacks appreciated.

Coffee provided, but if you desire something tastier, bring it yourself!

Craft Show at Central Lee School
At Central Lee High School, six miles south of Donnellson on Highway 218. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 16th.

Please note that the show is now in FEBRUARY instead of March.

Spring Clean Up scheduled for WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2nd , 2008
This year's Spring Clean Up Day is scheduled for Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008.

Donnellson residential customers ONLY. No businesses. No items brought in from out of town. Items for pick up include items too bulky for weekly garbage pickup. No white goods, no yard waste, no hazardous chemicals, no e-waste, or no tv's.

Yard waste will now be picked up twice a month. Beginning Monday, April 14th, yard waste will be picked up the second Monday and the last Wednesday of each month, April thru November.

Donnellson City-Wide Garage Sales
Scheduled for June 21st, 2008 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. A one-day popular event conducted annually. For additional information or to be put on the map, call Donnellson City Hall at 319-835-5714.






Donnellson 4th of July Parade
First parade held in 1881. Parade starts at 5:30 p.m. on July 4th on Main Street.

Features a patriotic theme, community floats, antique tractors, etc. Sandwiches, ice cream and desserts served at the Pilot Grove Savings Bank Community Room immediately following parade by the Lions Club.

Lee County Fair in Donnellson, IA
The "Oldest County Fair in Iowa". This year's Lee Co. Fair is set for July 9th - 14th, 2008. The Fair includes county 4-H displays, a carnival, queen contest and grandstand events such as demo derby, truck pulls and car racing.

The Rotter Barn contains historical items for viewing each year.

Another new event is the "Lee County Fair Idol" competition. The qualifying rounds will be held in the new Learning Center on Thursday and Friday evenings, with the winners performing during the demo derby for cash prizes.

A BIGGER CARNIVAL starts TUESDAY thru LATE SUNDAY.
KIDS DAY is THURSDAY and packed with loads of fun!
This year the fairboard is trying something new --- an inflatable carnival. Inflatables wil be available for all ages in lieu of carnival rides. The inflatables will completely fill the grounds and include Jurassic Park obstacle course, Runt Run, Dalmatian Bounce and Tugger the Tiger for the little ones and Euro Bungee, Adrenaline Rush Obstacle Course, Gladiator Jousting, Laser Tag and Accelerator Slide for the older "kids" to age 99.

Another addition this year will be buildings from the Miner Railroad Village. The plans are to have the one-room schoolhouse in place by Fair time and possibly the music house/general store/print house. These buildings were donated by the Dave Miner Family.

Kathy's Pumpkin Patch
Come visit and see Kathy's roadside stand featuring her huge selection of pumpkins, winter squash, gourds, fall decorations and ornamental corn. Located just east of Donnellson on Highway 2, the stand is open 7 days a week, September until Halloween.

Donnellson Apple Daze
Scheduled for SEPTEMBER 20th & 21st, 2008 in Donnellson.

A wonderful, family-oriented festival. Starts off Saturday morning with the pancake breakfast. Enjoy a pork loin luncheon at noon. Activities at Depot Park include games, apple-peeling contest, apple pie baking contest, water fight competition, apple walk, basketball contest, and much, much more for the young and the young at heart. School reunions and open house for Donnellson alumni. Musical entertainment also featured during the day and into the evening. City-wide scarecrow contest. Apple exhibit from Faeth Orchards. Come out and enjoy a fall, September weekend!

"Railroad Days" at Minerville
"Railroad Days" at Minerville will be held Sept. 15 & 16, 2007. Ft. Madison, Farmington & Western Railroad Museum. Minerville is located east of Wilson Lake, off of Hwy 2. Lots of railroad artifacts and a look at life during the 1920's. 319/750-3019.

Railroad Days will feature much of the Fort Madison, Farmington and Western Railroad's equipment in operation -- including a 1939 steam crane, former CB&Q motorcar "doodlebug", antique section cars & more. Antique trains will depart frequently for a 2 mile ride through the woods and across a trestle. Unlimited train rides will be included with admission to the show.

Donnellson's new 30-acre family-oriented park features ball diamonds, soccer fields, a 9 hole disc golf course, a pond and a walking trail. Woodlands Scenic Byway (East End)
Beginning in Donnellson, head west on Highway 2 and follow the winding road of the Woodlands Scenic Byway that introduces you to the people and scenery of southeastern Iowa. From forests to farmhouses, this leisurely drive invites mushroom hunting, bass fishing and more. Just follow signs from Donnellson west to and through Bonaparte, Bentonsport, Keosauqua, Troy, Bloomfield, Drakesville and Blakesburg.

Historic Hills Corridor

Mormon Trail
Donnellson is located along the first 265-mile segment of the 1846 en masse movement of the Mormons from Nauvoo, IL to the Valley of the Great Salt Lake.

Avenue of the Saints
The Avenue of the Saints is the name given to the 4-lane highway from St. Louis, MO to St. Paul, MN. Highway 218/27 is the portion of the Avenue of the Saints at Donnellson.

Waubonsie Trail
The Waubonsie Trail was the first hard road crossing the state of Iowa. It was built in 1911. It began by heading off from the Plank Road in Keokuk and went toward Donnellson. It continued north to Primrose, west to Farmington, then all the way across Iowa to Nebraska City. Waubonsie, for whom the trail was named, was the last chief of the Pottowattamie tribe. The trail passed where he was buried in Fremont County. There once was a restaurant in Donnellson known as the Waubonsie Inn.

Red Ball Route
The Red Ball Route was an unpaved road that went all the way from Keokuk, Iowa to St. Paul, MN. It was used in the late 1800's and was out of existence by 1925. It's route passed through Donnellson and to the villages of Houghton, Hillsboro, Salem and Oakland Mills.

Underground Railroad
The Donnellson Genealogical Department has documented evidence of the underground railroad passing near Donnellson. Contact the Donnellson Library at 319-835-5545 for several interesting stories.
